Simone Lutzko Quartet

11:30 am

The Simone Lutzko Quartet is composed of young up and coming session players in the city of Calgary. Featuring Simone on saxophone and vocals and an incredible backbone rhythm section, the group presents a fresh and modern take on some of the most beloved jazz classics.

Since being introduced to the art of jazz in her teenage years, Simone Lutzko has felt a

connection to the genre and the nuances brought by modern big band interpretations of treasured jazz standards. This inspiration allows Simone to always incorporate different melodic and emotionally evoking ideas to the music she performs, taking instruction by the likes of talented Calgary saxophonists Nate Waters and Richard Harding. There is a sense of sentimental storytelling in her playing, her smooth tone and style emulating the cool jazz era, understated in comparison with more well-known forms such as bebop and swing. Simone has immersed herself in the Calgary music scene for many years, playing with the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band, the Calgary Youth Jazz Orchestra, and jamming at the Blues Can. This past April, she recorded saxophone and background vocals on local musician Rome IX’s debut album at the infamous OCL Studios in Chestermere.

Joining Simone onstage are rising star rhythm section players Andrés Mira on drums, Michael Buie on keys, and Adam Pettigrew on upright bass. The group met through the University of Calgary Jazz Orchestra, each performing regularly in the Calgary scene. Andrés and Mike are the backbone of their trio Oranje with fellow UofC grad Joseph Bahhadi. Adam can be heard at his weekly slot at Betty Lou’s Library and at various shows around town. Guaranteed to provide a new and exciting spin on the swing of jazz, this quartet will leave you feeling youthful and invigorated for the day ahead.
