JazzYYC is deeply saddened by the passing of Brian Buchanan, an accomplished pianist respected as one of Western Canada’s top Jazz musicians and recognized throughout Canada. He played with many legendary artists including Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Herb Ellis, Freddie Hubbard, P.J Perry, Clarence “Big” Miller, Sheila Jordan, Cindy McLeod, and many others. A true artist, Brian wrote many original songs and he arranged, produced, and released several albums under his own name including, Soulstice, Avenues, The King Eddy ‘Live’ and his most recent album in 2020; “Solo Sessions”. His latest album received critical acclaim and airplay across Canada and the US. It was also nominated for “Jazz Recording of the Year” for the 2021 YYC Music Awards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Alberta Cancer Foundation.

On Sunday, September 26th from 3-10 pm we’ll be gathering to remember our beloved brother in jazz, Brian Buchanan, at the iconic King Eddy.
Brian was a deeply valued member of the jazz community in Calgary and beyond and has left behind a legacy of stunning music.
Musicians will be performing throughout the day, with some of Brian’s favourite (local) musicians, including Miss V, Jimmy Carver, George Phillip, Deanna Dubbin, Egor Ukoloff, Jeremy Coates, Tyler Hornby, Willy Joosen, Sandro Dominelli, Bob Tildesley, John DeWaal, John Gray, Allistair Elliott, Al Muirhead, Robin Tufts, Shane Statz and many more!
We invite everyone to drop by and hear some music, have a toast and pay homage, and to gather in celebration of our dear Brian. Please be sure to bring a mask.
