Girls in Jazz 2024 a huge success!

Latest news

The Women Band Directors International’s (WBDI) Girls in Jazz 2024, held January 26th and 27th at Lord Beaverbrook High School, was a huge success!

With our special guests Jodi Proznick, Audrey Ochoa, and Winnipeg Drummer Tetyana Haraschuk. the two-day event started with a day of Professional Development for area teachers. Taught by an all-female staff including our special guests, sessions included: Trombone and Bass Techniques; Starting a Jazz Band; Beginning Improvisation; Latin Styles for the Rhythm Section; Rehearsal Techniques; Drum Set Techniques; and a Tips and Tricks Q and A.

Friday night the Proznick/Ochoa Quartet performed a sold-out show at BuckingJam Palace. Much thanks and appreciation to Lisa and Tom Buck for all they do in support of jazz in Calgary.

Saturday was the big workshop day with 119 registrants ranging in age from 11 to many decades more. Participants were divided into three big bands and, through the course of the day, had a big band rehearsal, an improvisation workshop, a combo experience, and an instrument masterclass. We also had two staff jams – one to start the day and one at lunch. The workshop culminated in a performance of the three big bands.

Saturday night was the Girls in Jazz Gala Concert featuring performances by the Proznick/Ochoa Quartet, the Calgary Women’s Jazz Orchestra and the inaugural Girls in Jazz (GIJ) High School Honour Band. Members represented 14 different area schools and the band was directed by Shannon Fehr and Tetyana Haraschuk. The GIJ Honour Band rehearsed during the PD Day and served as the demo group for the Rehearsal Techniques session.

We are so pleased to partner with JazzYYC in awarding three $500 scholarships to deserving musicians in the Honour Band.

Thanks to our many volunteers and to our sponsors that made this all happen: Craig Senyk Initiatives; Cal-Crests; CADME; JazzYYC; The Drain Doctor, Long and McQuade Music, Music Direct, RPM Piano Movers; Save the Music Foundation and Phi Beta Mu. Special thanks also to Jens Lindemann.
