Since being introduced to the art of jazz in her teenage years, Simone Lutzko has felt a connection to the genre and the nuances brought by modern big band interpretations of treasured jazz standards. This inspiration allows Simone to always incorporate different melodic and emotionally evoking ideas to the music she performs, taking instruction by the likes of talented Calgary saxophonists Nate Waters and Richard Harding. There is a sense of sentimental storytelling in her playing, her smooth tone and style emulating the cool jazz era, understated in comparison with more well-known forms such as bebop and swing. Simone has immersed herself in the Calgary music scene for many years, playing with the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band, the Calgary Youth Jazz Orchestra, and jamming at the Blues Can. This past April, she recorded saxophone and background vocals on local musician Rome IX’s debut album at the infamous OCL Studios in Chestermere.
