Gabriela Laconsay (Bass)

Winner of the 2018 JazzYYC Keith Smith Scholarship for Emerging Artists, Gabriela is one of the up-and-comers of jazz.  She is an alumnus of the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band and the Calgary Youth Orchestra. She is currently studying at Humber College in Toronto where she continues to study jazz and dive into the other genres of music she loves to listen to like, R&B, Funk, Hip Hop, and Pop.

She has participated in festivals including the YYC Jazzwalk, The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival in Denton, Texas with the University of North Texas’s 8 O’Clock Lab Band and The Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Workshop. She has had the honour of performing with and learning from many notable musicians such as Ted Nash, Luis Bonilla, Dick Oatts, Danillo Pérez, and Lynn Seaton.

Joel Untinen (Guitar)

Calgarian guitarist Joel Untinen is currently living in New York City and working towards his Master of Music in Jazz Performance under guitarist Peter Bernstein at NYU. Prior to his studies in New York, Joel earned his Bachelor of Music from Ambrose University in Calgary (Canada), where he studied with guitarist Ralf Buschmeyer. Joel performs original music with his trio in Calgary and has collaborated with many of Calgary’s leading jazz musicians including Jon McCaslin, Andre Wickenheiser, Nate Waters, Steve Shepard, Mark Dejong, and Tyler Hornby, and has performed in the Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble as well as in Calgary’s leading improvised music society, Bug Incision.

He can be heard playing on the Nate Waters Quartet album, Fact/Contrafact, which has

received radio play on Alberta radio stations since its release in 2017. Joel was a recipient of the 2019 Individual Artist Grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and was a participant at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Jazz and Creative Music Workshop in August 2019. He currently teaches guitar at New York University as an adjunct music instructor.
