(403) 454-4774
In the basement of an historic building rumoured to be haunted stands a peculiar bookcase of dusty books and a vintage telephone. Walk behind the bookcase and you’ll find a spectacular live band of four musicians who commit themselves every Tuesday to tracing the shapes and forms left to be discovered in the compositions of legendary jazz composers. And every now and then, they’ll contribute something of their own, meditating and paying homage to the ever-evolving spirit of jazz. This is no ordinary band, this is a band known for its dynamics, its playfulness and sense of adventure. This is the David Lavoie Quartet.
Reservations recommended (walk-ins welcome). 403-454-4774.
Door: $15
David Lavoie is a guitarist, trumpeter, composer, and educator in Calgary, AB. He is also in demand as a freelance musical collaborator for many artists. He spent several years in Vancouver after completing his BMus at Capilano University and led a group with noted Canadian jazz musician Brad Turner there. David is passionate about sharing his music through a variety of projects. From jazz to post-punk, he has led several groups which play his original compositions. David’s multi-faceted approach to his music allows him to create thoughtfully and expressively in many genres.
Joanna Borromeo is a singer, pianist, composer, educator, and Juno-nominated recording artist. Well-versed in the genres of jazz, hiphop jazz, soul, R&B, and contemporary classical music, Joanna is one of Calgary’s most creative musical talents in the city. Her work as a freelance musician has taken her to festivals throughout the UK, the Caribbean, and all across Canada. As an artist and bandleader for her own projects, she’s performed in major jazz venues along the west coast of the US, including Yoshi’s SF, Kuumbwa Jazz Center, and LA’s the Blue Whale. What she loves the most about playing jazz is expressing harmonic nuance, having the room to stretch out improvisationally, and the art of exploring groove and rhythm. Her biggest musical influences in jazz to-date are Michael King (Theo Croker), Wynton Kelly, and Ahmad Jamal.
Nate Chiang is a freelance drummer living and playing in Calgary, AB. He has been gigging in a variety of styles (mostly jazz and hip hop) for over 5 years in Calgary and studying jazz drumming with some of Calgary’s foremost educators. Nathaniel is currently the band leader for the Nate Chiang Trio, the house band at Deane House in Inglewood.
